Tips - August 2006

Quick and easy working wardrobe.

Whether you are re-entering the workforce, have lost a significant amount of weight or just received a big promotion, being appropriately attired can be a real confidence booster. Here is a basic list of wardrobe staples to start you on your way:

  • A classic, conservative-coloured blazer in a natural fibre
  • A slim-fitting skirt and flat fronted trousers that co-ordinate with the blazer.
  • A tailored white shirt, with tails long enough to tuck into your skirt or trousers.
  • A black sheath dress that can take you through a day at the office and on to a professional function.
  • A fitted crew-neck sweater in a lightweight knit - office airconditioning is always too cold.
  • A camisole that can be worn under the blazer with the shirt or trousers.
  • Mid-heel leather shoes such as pumps.
  • A sleek leather handbag, large enough to hold professional material.
  • A narrow leather belt.

Once you have sorted out your essentials, you can start injecting more fasionable items, season by season, that individualise your outfits. This can usually be done quite inexpensively with accessories such as scarves and earrings.

Dealing with the "office complexion"

One drawback to working in an office is that cold air cuts down the body's circulation and reduces moisture levels. As a result, your complexion can take on a drab, dry appearance. If you regularly exfoliate your skin and apply a nourishing moisturiser, your complexion will benefit enormously, giving you a natural radiance without the need to expose yourself to the sun's ageing rays.

Dressing in proportion

The key to dressing well is proportion and balance, and the aim is to avoid excessive contrast. For example, making your waist look small will emphasise your hips and bust. Sure, highlight your good features and downplay those you consider to be less than ideal, but this is best done using colour. Remember, black appears to make things recede and therefore can hide flaws, whilst white brightens an area and is best for attention seeking.
