Recession Dressing
Attitudes in fashion are starting to resemble earlier times of decline, such as the 1940's post-war era and the Great Depression. With a fragile economy cramping us, the way people dress is making a difference on a new level. Fashion can play a part in your Global Financial Crisis (GFC) survival kit. The industry is pooling a look that is practical, whilst showing character and ingenuity. A headstrong and disillusioned image is emerging that intends on contradicting the surrounding angst. A look that expresses an essence of power and confidence, coupled with a modest and sensible approach, gives credibility to those deserving to stand out above the rest in the corporate world. Whilst maintaining an appearance of strength and earnestness, current styles are allowing for slight and ironic hints of optimistic boldness.
In contrast to lavish days gone, delicate and indulgent looks are out; as are signs of extravagance. Such symbols can now be counterproductive for you professionally. Trends are shying away from the past phases of opulence, With less to spend, attitudes are shifting. Notions of timelessness with garments are fundamental right now. Shoppers are investing in pieces that will keep for the longer term, and are naturally exercising greater vigilance with their purchases. It's a time for spending on quality, not quantity. The special is being chosen over the dispensable and unreliable goods that were frivolously thrown around before. A return to the roots is being promoted using robust knit and crochet designs with a homemade feel. Other hearty symbols of the age-old rural life are built-in with tweeds, plaids, boots - both riding and wellies.
In all, it is a time for showing what you're really made of, literally. So go with a tough look that says that 'you're worth it'. Keep it upbeat with individual touches that express a zesty attitude. But at the same time, don't lose your depth by embracing some high quality, down-to-earth comfort pieces for the season. Here are a few general tips to keep your fashion head above water this GFC. 1. Shop for the season ahead, and get good use out of your wardrobe.
Variety is the spice of life, and your old favourites can be given a new lease on life if worn in different ways. Why not try using your summer tops and shirts under a trendy jacket for the colder months?
In trying economic times, we can't afford to throw money away on items which hide away in the back of the cupboard for years before being thrown away because the colour or hang just wasn't right. Know the colours that work for you, and buy to your body shape and don't be afraid to spend that little bit more on something that is going to last, because buying too cheap is false economy.
If the cut, colour or feel of a piece doesn't work with your changing tast or shape, it's time to get crafty. Begin by tailoring your favourite pieces - a good fit can turn a good piece into an inseperable. Get that him length perfect, nip in the waist or convert that dress into a top or skirt. If the colour isn't right, make it right! Fabrics and leather can be dyed to suit your personal colour, and resurrect that great fitting piece from relegation. Finally, don't be afraid to alter details. Try sewing on some different buttons to that coat to bring it in to the current seasons look, use a scarf as a belt on that tired dress, or through on a brooch or badge. Remember, if you can't DIY it, there are experts out there who can help!
Jewellery is back with a bang, from art deco to modern, don't be afraid to wear it loud and proud. Dig out those old pieces from the bottom of your jewellery box, give them a good clean and dress up some of your less flamboyant pieces of clothing with a combination of the new and classic.
